This past weekend in Santo Domingo was amazing! We started out Friday by going to the president's house, visiting Christopher Columbus's son's house, museums from the new world, the first street in the new world, and many original buildings from 500 years ago. After that, we took awhile to shop around in Santo Domingo and eat lunch in local cafes. We then went to an aquarium and then on to some caves! The there were three caves with four lakes, one lake in each cave and then on of the caves we rode on a boat through to get to the fourth lake. The final cave has a legend that if you touch the water you will have twins.... all of us touched it so it looks like lots of babies will be on the way! After our extremely long day of wandering the city, those of us who decided to extend our day trip checked into a hostel. We got dressed up, and went around the city looking for a place to eat dinner and relax. After dinner we heard some music, followed our ears, and ended up at a club near our hostel in the Zona Colonial. Lot's of the people in Santo Domingo speak English, so we didn't get to practice our Spanish much that night. The next day, Saturday, we shopped around and hung out in the city during the day and then went to a Juan Luis Guerra concert in the evening. It rained incredibly hard during the entire concert, but that is what made it fun! There were thousands upon thousands of people all singing and dancing in the rain together. When the national anthem was played at the beginning of the concert, the pride that the people have for their country was very evident. It was a very powerful feeling to be there, amongst thousands of Dominican people, enjoying the music that they love. That concert, as well as the whole weekend, are incredible memories that I will never forget.
¡Este fin de semana pasada en Santo Domingo era excelente! Empezamos el viernes con visitando la casa del presidente, visitando la casa del hijo de Cristobal Colon, museos del mundo nuevo, la primera calle en el mundo nuevo, y muchos edificios originales de 500 años en el pasado. Después, fuimos de compras en Santo Domingo y comimos el almuerzo en cafés locales. Próximo, fuimos a un acuario y después algunas cuevas. Había tres cuevas y cuatro lagos, un lago en cada cueva, y subimos un bote para llegar al cuatro cueva. Una de los cuevas tiene in una leyenda que si se tocara el agua, tendría gemelos.... ¡todos de nosotros lo tocábamos, entonces parece que muchos bebés en camino! Después del día largo, algunos de nosotros entramos un hostel. Nos cambiamos la ropa, y salíamos por la cuidad para cenar y relajar. Después de la cena oímos música, seguimos nuestros oídos, y terminó en un club cerca de nuestro hostel en la Zona Colonial. Muchas de las personas en Santo Domingo hablan Inglés, y por eso, no practicamos nuestro español mucho esa noche. Al día siguiente, sábado, fuimos a comprar todo y lo colgó en la ciudad durante el día y luego fuimos a un concierto de Juan Luis Guerra, en la noche. Llovió muy duro durante todo el concierto, pero eso es lo que hace que sea divertido! Había miles y miles de personas cantando y bailando en la lluvia juntos. Cuando el himno nacional se jugó en el inicio del concierto, el orgullo que las Dominicanas tienen para su país era muy evidente. Era una sensación muy poderosa para estar alí, entre miles de personas dominicanas, disfrutando de la música que ellos aman. Ese concierto, así como el fin de semana, son increíbles recuerdos que nunca voy a olvidar.
